Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses prescription medication, intravenous fluids, or nitrous oxide to help people relax while receiving oral health care. It’s a safe and effective way for individuals to receive the treatment they need without having to experience any of the potentially negative side effects.

At Designer Smiles, Dr. Ospina offers sedation for all services. As a dentist, it’s his goal to ensure you’re comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire visit. From oral surgery to routine teeth cleaning, if you’re interested in sedation, let Dr. Ospina know.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

You’re a good candidate for sedation dentistry if you:

  • Experience dental anxiety
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Find it difficult to sit still
  • Need extensive dental work
  • Have a fear of dental tools or machinery

When you visit Designer Smiles for the first time, ask Dr. Ospina about the various sedation options available. He can customize a solution that aligns with your needs, allowing you to remain calm and relaxed during treatment.

What are the types of sedation dentistry?

At Designer Smiles, Dr. Ospina offers several types of sedation dentistry, including:

IV sedation

Dr. Ospina is licensed and certified to administer conscious IV sedation. This sedation is one step below general anesthesia since you are still capable of breathing without a breathing tube. While you are aware of your surroundings, patients often fall asleep during their treatment since they are so relaxed.

Dr. Ospina can adjust the amount of medication you receive throughout the treatment. IV sedation takes several hours to wear off, so you need a friend or family member you trust to bring you to our practice and drive you home after your procedure. This should be someone who can stay with you and take care of you after your treatment.

Inhaled sedation

Inhaled sedation uses nitrous oxide or “laughing gas.” You breathe the gas through a mask placed over your nose. Inhaled sedation works instantly by encouraging relaxation and feelings of euphoria.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation utilizes prescription drugs. On the day of your appointment, you take the medication at home and have a friend or family member drive you to our office. Once the medicine kicks in, it causes you to relax. You might feel drowsy or doze off, but Dr. Ospina can wake you if necessary.

What type of sedation dentistry will benefit me?

Before developing a custom treatment plan, Dr. Ospina takes several factors into account, including your age and medical history. Following an oral exam and in-office discussion, he can make recommendations that align with your needs.
