Robot-Assisted Dental Surgery Q & A

What is robot-assisted dental surgery?

Robot-assisted dental surgery combines advanced surgical tools and artificial intelligence to improve treatment efficiency and reduce the risk of potential complications.

At Designer Smiles, Dr. Ospina offers robot-assisted dental surgery with Yomi®. Yomi-enabled surgery makes it easy for Dr. Ospina to provide personalized care. What’s more, the technology makes planning and placing dental implants efficient and hassle-free.

What role does Yomi play in implant surgery?

Yomi gives the dental team important information on your teeth and jaws. This helps them plan dental surgery treatment that is personalized to you. Yomi then guides Dr. Ospina to achieve that plan. Yomi also allows the dental surgeon to adapt the plan for your patient care needs.

How does robot-assisted dental surgery work?

Yomi robot-assisted implant placement is much more accurate and much less invasive than traditional implant surgery. This allows for fewer complications, quicker recovery times, and improved treatment outcomes.

The Yomi system functions by providing Dr. Ospina with important information about your teeth and jaw. He uses that information to develop a customized surgical treatment plan that guides your dental implant into the most accurate position possible.

During the implant placement procedure, Dr. Ospina is positioned next to you and near a computer console. He holds onto and directs the Yomi instruments. A software program monitors Dr. Ospina’s movements and delivers multi-sensory guidance, allowing for greater accuracy and precision.

Does robot-assisted dental surgery replace my surgeon?

No. During robot-assisted dental surgery, Dr. Ospina is in complete control. The Yomi system provides helpful assistance, but it doesn’t actually perform the operation. Instead, it provides sensory feedback information that Dr. Ospina can feel, hear, and see. He uses that information to make adjustments in real-time, ensuring long-lasting, positive results.

Is robot-assisted dental surgery new?

Robot-assisted dental surgery is relatively new, but it has a proven track record. In fact, it’s now considered a standard form of care. It’s estimated that more than one million Americans undergo robotic-assisted surgery each year.

Is robot-assisted surgery safe?

Robot-assisted surgery is safe and usually well-tolerated. If you experience dental anxiety or have a sensitive gag reflex, ask Dr. Ospina about sedation dentistry. Dr. Ospina is licensed and certified to administer intravenous (IV) sedation. He can adjust the amount of medication you receive throughout the procedure, so you’re comfortable and relaxed the entire time.

It takes several hours for intravenous sedation to wear off, so it’s important to have a friend or family member available to drive you home after the procedure.

What is recovery like after robot-assisted implant surgery?

Unlike traditional implant dental surgery, robot-assisted dental surgery is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time. Most patients are even able to return to work the following day. It’s normal to experience mild swelling and sensitivity.

Eat only soft foods for the first 48 hours and take over-the-counter pain medication if necessary. You can return to work and other activities the next day.
