A crown is a custom-crafted, tooth-shaped cap bonded on top of a damaged or severely decaying tooth. It protects enamel that’s weak or worn down and prevents the need for an extraction.
Traditionally, getting a dental crown took at least two appointments. Designer Smiles has an in-house laboratory called Designer Smiles Lab. The lab is fully equipped with the latest technology, allowing Dr. Ospina to design and mill crowns in a single visit. You can even receive a same-day crown at an emergency dental visit.
At Designer Smiles, Dr. Ospina uses crowns to:
You might also benefit from a dental crown if you need root canal therapy. During a root canal, Dr. Ospina removes the pulp from the center of your tooth.
At Designer Smiles, getting a custom dental crown takes just one visit.
First, Dr. Ospina conducts an oral exam and assesses the condition of your tooth. If there’s visible damage or decay, he uses an intraoral scanner to take digital impressions of your mouth.
We then transfer your digital impressions to Designer Smiles Lab on the Sirona Cerec computer. Technicians at our laboratory use these digital impressions to create same-day custom crowns using our on-site CEREC milling machines. The machine then creates a custom dental crown made of a block of porcelain or zirconia. The crown is then seated on the same day your treatment is started.
While the technicians create your crown, you can read a book, take a nap, or relax. When your crown is ready, Dr. Ospina numbs your mouth with an anesthetic and bonds the crown to the top of your tooth.
