Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people, however, aren’t aware that technology also is impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair, causing less discomfort and creating satisfying results. What is a crown?
Also known as a "cap," a crown is used to restore teeth which are badly broken down, or those that have huge fillings which are prone to breaking down. The crown acts like a "thimble," covering over the tooth and helping to prevent the tooth from breaking.

Traditionally, crowns were made entirely of metal, such as gold, or were made of a metal core with porcelain baked onto the outside to make them look more like natural teeth. Dr. Ospina still uses these materials in selected instances, but today we primarily use pressed ceramic crowns.

These crowns, when bonded in place, have been shown to be as strong as crowns with the metal core. And, because there's no metal, light can reflect through the ceramic crown, similar to a natural tooth.

This means that in most instances, it's impossible for a casual observer to tell a ceramic crown from a natural tooth.
